Why a Ukulele Teacher Summit?

What is this Teacher Summit?

Having seen the impact that great ukulele teachers can have on people of all ages and backgrounds, I am striving to build a Ukulele Teacher community here in the States. James Hill's wonderful work in Canada has been a huge inspiration and I was blessed to complete 3 years of his teacher's training program and have taught in his program. I highly recommend Ukulele in the Classroom and still offer all 3 levels here in Austin.

I am not offering a methodology as much as a platform to explore what it means to teach ukulele and how to build an effective program for specific populations (elementary ed, Seniors, etc.) with an emphasis on ensemble playing.

Access to Ensemble Arrangements

Community-based focus

Ukulele Teacher Summit arose out of a deep desire to grow this already amazing community of ukulele teachers. Because ukulele is such a unique instrument, I feel strongly that it needs to be taught in it's own way. The Summit will offer tips and teaching opportunities for attendees as well as access to a growing library of ensemble ukulele arrangements.

Attendees will have a chance to watch me lead the Austin Ukestra in a rehearsal on Saturday morning. There are multiple parts for differentiated skill levels as well as parts for U-bass. Many of the arrangements for the Austin Ukestra, and many more will be made available to attendees.

Skill-Building: As Teachers And Players

Teaching & Playing

Ukulele programs can only be as strong as their teacher. I am offering the Ukulele Teacher Summit to help guide teachers in honing both their playing and their teaching.

Peer teaching is a phenomenal way to grow your teaching abilities. There will several opportunities for teaching among the teachers.

Attendees will gain valuable wisdom from other teachers at the Ukulele Teacher Summit 2019. There is such a deep well of corporate ukulele teaching knowledge among my colleagues and I am hoping to provide a platform for ideas to be shared and to help elevate the possibilities of teaching ukulele!

Kevin is an excellent teacher and knows how to present material to students so they get it and understand it. People like Kevin who come from a teaching background are best to know how to do this. Along with his dedication and knowledge of ukulele, I think a “ teacher” or if interested in becoming one, this is certainly worth the time and investment in the program. Zing!”

— Chontel Klobas STRUM (Seattle's Totally Relaxed Ukulele Musicians)

Kevin is an amazing musician and educator. His musical prowess makes learning from him a true joy, and his easy going style makes ukulele accessible and much more interesting.”

— Christa Turnell student at Rocky Mountain Ukulele Festival
